S:t Jacob's Vocal Ensemble
Stockholm, Sweden
S:t Jacob's Vocal Ensemble (S:t Jacobs Vokal Ensemble) is a mixed choir consisting of just over 30 members. The choir was founded in the fall of 2007 as a youth choir (S:t Jacob's Youth Choir), and was part of a project within the city of Stockholm, called the “Storstadsprojektet”, which was organized by the Stockholm Cathedral parish. The purpose of the project was to spread choral singing among youth singers. The choir made its debut concert on November 17 of the same year. Since then and to this day, the choir has been led by Mikael Wedar.
The majority of concerts and activities with SJVE are held in St. Jacobs Church and in Storkyrkan. We rehearse on Mondays, participate in the parish’s services several times a year, hold concerts under our own direction and together with other musicians. We strive to give the audience special and diverse experiences that extend beyond the immediate impression, and resonate long after the doors have closed behind you.
During the past year, the choir has produced Nils Lindberg's Requiem in Storkyrkan, but also recorded
an album with folk music artist Fanny Källström's folk music fair Tiden har sin gang. St. Jacob's Vocal
Ensemble has also achieved several international successes in competitions such as Slovakia Cantat
2010 where we won the Grand Prix, third prize in the International Harald Andersén Choir
Competition in 2012 and 2016, third prize in the International Baltic Sea Choir Competition in
Jurmala 2023, as well as Grand prix in Concurso Coral de Tolosa in the Basque Country in 2013 and
second prize in 2018 at the 50th anniversary of Tolosako Abesbazta, as well as winning the European
Grand Prix for Choral Singing in Debrecen 2014, and in May 2024 the choir won all categories in
which we participated during the Harmonie Festival, Limburg in Germany, and received the festival's
Grand Prix.
When not competing, the choir strive to participate around the world in various musical contexts such as
festivals, tours and educational programs.
This has taken the choir to places like Hong Kong, France,
Germany and Russia.
